Unwinding at The Liberty Inn: A Relaxing Getaway
Sometimes, all you need is a weekend away to recharge. That's exactly what we did at The Liberty Inn, and it was everything I hoped for and more.
I first saw The Liberty Inn on @wellnesstravelled Instagram page. I’m always saving cool places to travel to, and this one, discovered purely through my own scrolling (no sponsored posts here!), was just over an hours drive from us, making it a perfect weekend getaway spot for my husband and I.
Our drive was relaxing and uneventful. We stopped at Tin Roof Cafe, in Erin, to get a coffee before heading to the Inn. They still had a fun Valentine’s Drink Menu posted and I ordered the ‘That Me Espresso’, which was a strawberry white mocha with oat milk. It was very sweet and dessert-like.
From Erin, it was a short drive to The Liberty Inn. The entrance is gated and after entering the code, we headed to the parking area. We had reserved an EV spot to charge our truck, which was a handy amenity.
After grabbing our bags we headed to our room. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and a couple of guests were outside enjoying the sunshine. We were in the Florian suite, the last one at the end of the building. As there is no front desk like at a hotel, the doors have codes on them for self-entry upon arrival.
As soon as we opened the door we were impressed. The space was beautifully and thoughtfully decorated.
The kitchen area was amazing! The pottery and mugs were all made by Jacqui Liberty, a co-founder of The Liberty Inn, and the owner of Soft Fire Ceramics, a pottery studio in Alton. I loved the fruit bowl!
The bedroom was cozy and had a selection of pillows (a big fluffy one and a firmer one). There were Hush weighted bathrobes hanging on the wall and a big stack of fluffy white towels. On the night tables, there were a few books and a linen spray to promote relaxation.
The shower was huge and there were complementary face products. But the best part of the bathroom was the heated floor! We’re definitely putting in heated flooring when we renovate our bathroom. Luxury!!
Throughout the suite there were many added details that added to the experience, such as fresh flowers on the kitchen table (my favourite colour, purple!), a record player in the bedroom and a Kala red light face mask.
Since there is no restaurant on the property the owners provide the guests with breakfast. Inside the fridge we found milk, croissants (ready to be baked), eggs, and the cutest little container of jam and butter. At this point, they are not able to accommodate dietary preferences but I was happy for the assortment of fruit and oat milk for our morning coffee. There’s also a Nespresso machine and a milk frother for making lattes!
We decided to drive into Alton for dinner. Alton was settled in the early 1800s on the banks of Shaw's Creek.
We ate at Gather Cafe. They have wood fire pizza and calzones, and vegan cheese! The staff were friendly and there were many seating options, with a casual atmosphere. The pizzas were huge and we took our leftovers back with us.
One thing to note is: they close early, at 7pm, so plan your dinner accordingly. We had plenty of time and didn’t feel rushed but they did mention, as were finishing up, that they would be closing soon.
I also noticed that their breakfast/lunch menu had a few vegan options. We didn’t make it back there unfortunately.
There’s not a lot of nightlife options in Caledon and besides that we’re not really into that scene anymore anyways!
After dinner we got cozy in our weighted bathrobes and settled in for the night to watch 1883, which I thought was fitting since The Liberty Inn was built in 1855. It was originally a post office and general store.
We slept well. There was some noise (footsteps) from the suite above us but overall it was very quiet. We listened to Miles Davis while eating our breakfast. It was very peaceful and relaxing.
The heavy rain put a damper on our hiking plans, so we decided to explore the nearby town of Alton instead, starting with a visit to the historic Alton Mill. It’s a 19th century stone mill which has been converted into an arts centre.
We spent a few hours wandering through the galleries and shops and learning about the history of the mill.
We started getting hungry for lunch so we drove into Erin and went to The Busholme Restaurant and Bar.

The menu is a typical pub menu. There are a few vegan options or at least things that could be made vegan. I went for the tofu tacos and my husband had the daily curry special, which happened to be veggie. I wish I had gotten the curry because the tacos weren’t great. While I appreciated the effort to have vegan options, the tofu tacos were a bit bland. However, my husband really enjoyed the curry.
Next stop on our weekend adventure was Orangeville. We walked around the shops on the main street and then got coffee at Mochaberry. I ordered a vanilla latte with soy milk. It was delicious!! The coffee shop was busy but we managed to get a table. I noticed they had some pre-made wraps and other items that were vegan, but since we just had lunch we weren’t ready for more food.
Bruno (co-founder of the Inn) texted me to see if we needed any breakfast items topped up for the next day and they gladly dropped off some more coffee pods for us. The attention to detail and personal touch was something we hadn’t experienced anywhere else.
The Liberty Inn has it’s own Nordic Spa, with cold plunge, hot tub and sauna. After you have booked your room, you get a link to reserve a private 50 minute session, for $35. We loved this! We started off in the sauna then tried the cold plunge. I didn’t last long and could only get in up to my waist. So cold!! Then it was time for the hot tub. We rotated several times between the hot and cold. Afterwards we felt relaxed and rejuvenated all at the same time.
After our spa time, it was back to the room for a relaxing evening in. I tried the Kala red light mask while listening to one of the records. We ate our leftover pizza from the night before and binge watched 1883.
The next morning, after our relaxing breakfast, it was hard to pack up and leave this amazing Inn. From the thoughtfully designed suite to the private Nordic spa, The Liberty Inn provided a truly exceptional and relaxing getaway. It's a place we'd wholeheartedly recommend for anyone seeking a peaceful escape.
Seriously, The Liberty Inn was that good! And just so you know, this is a 100% genuine, unsponsored review. I just wanted to share my happy place with you.
